Leaving Canada is taxed as a sale. For this client, a move to the UK in June 2027 means a deemed gain of about CAD 96,480 on the non-registered account, half of it taxable, before a single share is sold.
Why: on ceasing to be resident, most property is taken to be sold at market value. The RRSP and TFSA are left out; the non-registered account is not. The gain is measured against an ACB replayed from the confirmed trades, each at its own date’s exchange rate with the issuers’ return of capital applied, and the review lists the forms that follow: T1243, T1161 above CAD 25,000, and the optional T1244 election to defer the tax.
Decision support for professional review, not tax advice. The tax itself is not computed: the taxable half is taxed at the client’s marginal rate and province. A holding whose cost is not known stops the total; it is never guessed.
