Borderfolio for Advisors / Solutions
Portfolio review software for financial advisers
Review a prospect’s existing portfolio before any assets move. Import the statements they authorise you to see, bring every account into one checked picture, look at costs, income, performance and cross-border exposure, write your own conclusions, and hand over a PDF that states where each figure comes from.
The trial is on the Founding Adviser plan, with no card to start. Prefer to look first? Open a sample firm, read-only, with fictional clients and real prices.
The review that comes before the transfer
A prospect rarely arrives with one tidy account. There is a pension at one provider, an ISA or a taxable account at another, an old broker account abroad, and a folder of statements in three formats and two currencies. Before you can say anything useful about the portfolio, someone has to rebuild it: key in holdings, look up prices and fund domiciles, convert currencies, and check that the totals agree with the statements. That preparation is most of the work, and the prospect has not yet agreed to anything.
Borderfolio does the rebuilding from the statements themselves and leaves the judgement to you. It is built for three situations:
- Prospect reviews. A first meeting with a portfolio the client still holds elsewhere, reviewed in full before any transfer is discussed.
- Second opinions. A client who wants an independent read of what another firm or platform has built for them.
- Ongoing reviews. Your existing clients, reviewed on a cycle, with each year’s report kept exactly as it was issued.
Why this preparation usually takes hours is the subject of a separate note.
How a review runs
- Create the client. Residence, citizenship, base currency and the tax profile the cross-border screens use. Nothing is assumed that the profile does not say.
- Import the statements. PDF, CSV, XLSX or images, up to five files at a time. Exports from 15 brokers are read by format-specific parsers; other statements go through an extraction model. Every import opens for review, and nothing reaches the client’s portfolio until you confirm it. See importing statements.
- Read the consolidated portfolio. Every account valued in the client’s base currency at ECB reference rates, allocation by fund domicile and by currency, and time- and money-weighted returns where the transaction history supports them. If a holding cannot be priced, the total is withheld and the holding is named. See multi-broker consolidation.
- Check costs and income. Fund charges on today’s value, your adviser and platform fees, transaction costs paid in the last twelve months, and expected income from the funds’ trailing distributions, before and after withholding.
- Review the cross-border findings. Fund domicile, dividend withholding, US-situs estate exposure, tax wrappers and, for covered residences, local screens. Each finding states its assumptions and what it does not cover. See cross-border portfolio analysis.
- Add your commentary and generate the report. Your notes print under your name, apart from the system’s analysis. The report is rendered from a stored snapshot, so the document you take to the meeting is the one you can reopen next year.
What the client receives
A PDF under your firm’s name with the sections you choose: an executive summary, allocation, holdings, performance, dividends and fees, currency and fund-domicile exposure, the cross-border considerations with their assumptions, relocation planning when a move is recorded, and your notes. A closing section on data sources, assumptions and limitations always prints. See reports.
Report pages for a sample client appear in the country brochures, for example the Europe brochure (PDF) and the United Kingdom brochure (PDF). The clients in them are fictional; the prices and tax tables are real.
On the Practice plan the report carries your logo, contact block and colours; on White Label, Borderfolio’s name is removed from it altogether. See white-label portfolio reports.
From review to proposal
When the review leads to a recommendation, a scenario sets the client’s current portfolio beside the one you propose, at the tax residence you choose, without changing the actual holdings. The comparison covers allocation, currency, domicile, fund fees and, where modelled, dividends kept after tax. The adviser picks every replacement; Borderfolio only suggests a catalogued Irish UCITS counterpart where one exists. See proposal scenarios.
What stays with you
- The conclusions. Borderfolio generates no recommendations and never places a trade.
- The validation. Extracted holdings and transactions are yours to check and confirm, and the figures are screening estimates for your professional review.
- The client relationship. The prospect’s assets stay where they are; Borderfolio reads statements, not logins, except for the two brokers whose read-only connection you choose to set up.
- The documents. Statement files are kept for seven days so the extraction can be checked, then purged; the confirmed figures remain. See security and data handling.
Where it stops
- Only Interactive Brokers (Flex) and Freedom24 accounts can be connected for a daily read-only sync. Every other provider is reviewed from statements.
- It is not a CRM, a back office or a trading platform, and it does not rebalance.
- Tax figures cover the residences and calculations listed under countries and coverage; anything else is marked as not modelled rather than estimated.
