A portfolio analytics platform for advisers: what it should do, and what it should leave alone

Most advisers do not need another system of record. They need the step between a client's brokerage statements and a review they can stand behind. Done by hand, that step takes the most time. This article sets out what a portfolio analytics platform for independent advisers and boutique firms should cover, and where it should stop.

One job, done properly

The job is narrow. Statements come in from several brokers. The holdings are consolidated, priced and analysed, and the result goes to the client as a review. Borderfolio for Advisors is built for that job alone. It is not a CRM, a custody platform, a trading system or a financial-planning suite, and it does not generate buy or sell recommendations. It sits alongside the tools a firm already uses.

Statements in, without retyping

The import accepts PDF, CSV, XLSX and image statements, up to five files at a time. Exports from thirteen brokers are read directly: Freedom24, Trading 212, Interactive Brokers (Flex), DEGIRO, eToro, Revolut, Trade Republic, Freetrade, XTB, Saxo, Schwab, Swissquote and Avanza. Other statements go through an extraction model. Either way, nothing reaches the client's holdings until the adviser has reviewed and confirmed it. How consolidation works covers this in detail.

Figures that admit what they do not know

Several rules decide whether a consolidated figure can be trusted:

Analysis a client would not get from their broker

Allocation by position, trading currency and fund domicile. Performance, income and fees. For internationally mobile clients there is also a cross-border screen: fund domicile read from the ISIN, US-source dividend withholding at the residence's treaty rate, US-situs holdings against the non-resident estate-tax threshold, and catalogued Irish UCITS counterparts for US funds. Every figure states its assumption. Reviews for internationally mobile clients goes through each one.

Built for a firm, not a single login

A firm is an organisation, and its advisers are members with roles. Owners manage settings, branding, members and permanent deletions. Advisers work with clients, imports, analytics and reports. Every request is authorised on the server against the adviser's membership, so one firm can never read another firm's clients. An owner can require two-factor sign-in for everyone. Sensitive actions are recorded in an audit trail that owners can read. The security page has the details.

Reports under the firm's name

The review is generated as a PDF from a stored snapshot. Your firm's name is on every report, and on the Practice and White Label plans your logo and contact block too. On the White Label plan the workspace runs on your own domain and Borderfolio's name is removed from reports, sign-in and the workspace. White-label portfolio reports covers what is branded and what is not.

Questions to ask of any platform

Whether you choose Borderfolio or something else, these questions separate a reporting template from a tool you can put your name to:
